The Hobie 16 Aussie upper forestay runs parallel to the Aussie Forestay and is for the jib halyard line. The Jib Halyard line raises and jib and controls the mast rake. It runs from the top of the jib, thru the fiddle blocks and down the mast to the halyard cleat. The Aussie system provides a 4:1 pulley system to allow for easy mast rake adjustment on the fly and the independent forestay provides redundant a safety system if the jib luff wire or the jib halyard were to break. Racers and recreational windsurf sailors can adjust outhaul tension "on the fly" for maximum power or speed:

Low gear: Loosen outhaul tension to "power-up" to get going, even in light wind.
Shift to drive: Tighten outhaul to flatten sail for more speed as you get onto a plane and/or more efficiency when heading upwind.
Adjust the outhaul (sail shape) from either side, at any time.
